Your “meta” titles and descriptions may be the most important content on this web page for search engines, although they don’t actually display on the page itself. They are used by search engines to identify what your page is all about, and to determine whether its content will be relevant for a given search term.

They’re also displayed in search engine results, which means that the text you use here should give readers a clear reason to visit your page instead of the one that appears directly above or below it.

Since your meta titles and descriptions need to serve these two purposes, it’s important to keep two things in mind:

  • Use good keywords in your title and description
  • Write for humans as well as search-engine-robots; meaning, write clear and coherent sentences, and give readers a reason to visit your page.
Since there’s only so much room on a search engine result page, your text in these forms can’t be too long. While the cut-off length depends on the search engine, we recommend keeping your title fewer than 70 characters, and your description fewer than 156 characters. (There is a character counter built into the Energy Circle PRO system.)
